Where do I park?

The parking lot is behind Buchholz Mortuary. The entrance to the parking lot is off of Jefferson Street. The spaces to park in are on the left side.

Does the studio offer drop-in sessions or open studio time?

Does the studio sell gift cards?

Yes, we do. There is a tab at the top where you can choose "Gift Cards." You can also contact the studio.

Do you fire pottery that wasn't made in the studio?

The studio does not fire pottery that was made outside of the studio.

What equipment is available for students and members to use?

The studio is equipped with working tables, pottery wheels, and a large slab roller. Hopefully soon the studio will also have a pugmill, and a wall extruder.

Why take a class at Amy Joy Pottery Community Studio?

Amy is an education professional with 20+ years of teaching experience as well as a Master of Art and Master of Fine Arts degree from Fontbonne University. Amy brings a wealth of knowledge, and skill to the studio, patience, kindness, and empathy, and she ensures high-quality instruction and guidance for students at all skill levels. She is continually learning to stay on top of techniques, trends, and skills to teach and to use in her work.

Do I need experience to take a class or workshop?

No experience needed!

How do I sign up or register for a class or workshop?

What is included in the cost of a class or workshop?

The cost includes, clay, glazes, tools, and firings.

What type of classes does the studio offer?

The studio offers classes to learn to use the pottery wheel, as well as hand building classes and workshops.

What is the typical class size?
-
The maximum for the hand building class will be 12 students.
-
The maximum for the pottery wheel class will be 8 students.

What do I need to bring and wear?
-
For hand building class: just yourself!
-
Wear comfy clothes that you do not mind getting a little dirty (everything will wash out).

For pottery wheel class: bring a towel and wear comfortable clothes.

Can I bring my own clay or glaze to use?
-
No. There are so many types of clay bodies, and glazes that it is hard to know what is what. Firing glaze and clay at the wrong temperatures could cause everything to melt and ruin a kiln.

What kind of clay and glaze is used at the studio?
-
The studio uses Laguna WC609 Cone 6 clay.
-
The studio uses a variety of glazes formulated to be fired at Cone 6.

Can I bring children to the studio?

Unfortunately, no. There are a lot of sharp tools that can be dangerous to small children, fragile unfired projects, and hot kilns.

Do I glaze my pieces?

Yes, you will learn how to glaze your pieces.

Do I fire my pieces?

The studio will take care of all the firings.

How long do pieces take from start to finish?

4-5 weeks.

Can I rent studio space?

Currently, the private studio space is being rented. However, you can sign up as a member to have open studio time and have a space to work.

Preparing for a Class or Workshop:

What should I wear?
-
Wear comfy clothes and close-toed shoes that you do not mind getting a little dirty (everything will wash out).

Please keep jewelry, bracelets, watches, and other valuables at home.

What if I have long hair and long nails?
-
Please make sure hair is tied back.
-
Short nails are highly recommended. Long nails can cut and nick the pieces. It is extremely difficult to learn how to make pieces on the pottery wheel with long nails.

Can I bring a snack and drink to the studio?

Please make sure drinks have a secure lid so they do not spill.

You are welcome to bring snacks in a closed container.
